Nama Shivaya

Has anyone ever noticed before that an orange juicer resembles a Shivling?

So, when we’re squeezing juice, are we actually bathing the Lord, who loves being bathed (abishegams)?

Nama Shivaya ❤

I am afraid you got it terribly wrong on several counts. Firstly, your spelling is wrong – it is not ‘ling’ but linga, or, better still, lingam.

Linga actually has several parts; chief among them are 1) the cylindrical part on the top 2) the base (What is known as ‘ஆவுடை’ in Tamil) or yoni in Sanskrit. Together, the lingam-yoni connote the masculine and feminine principles in the entirety of creation and all existence. See the picture here : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lingam#/media/File:Siva_linga.jpg

Some are of opinion that the linga also represents the Brahma. The illustration makes the point clear : https://www.booksfact.com/images/religions/siva_lingam_science.jpg

The lingam may have one / four / five faces. An Ekmukha lingam has just one face, Chaturmukha lingam has four faces in the cardinal directions, while a Panchamukha lingam has a total of five (the fifth is on the top) and represents Sadashiva. How many faces does the linga like juicer has ?

When you apply pressure with all your might to squeeze out the juice from a fruit, do you really believe that you are trying to bathe ? Besides, I also feel that Gods won’t really love ‘abishekams’ – most of the materials used are sticky and not-so-pleasant smelling.
Wikipedia explains the iconography of lingam as follows :

The historic lingam iconography has included:

Mukhalingam, where the lingam has the face of Shiva carved on it.[76][77] An Ekmukha lingam has just one face, Chaturmukha lingam has four faces in the cardinal directions, while a Panchamukha lingam has a total of five (the fifth is on the top) and represents Sadashiva.[78][79] Among the mukha-lingam varieties, the four face version are more common.

Ashtottara-sata linga, where 108 miniature lingas are carved on the pujabhaga (main linga) following certain geometric principles.

Ashtottara-sata linga, where 108 miniature lingas are carved on the pujabhaga (main linga) following certain geometric principles.

Sahasra linga, where 1001 miniature lingas are carved on the pujabhaga (main linga) following certain geometric principles (set in 99 vertical lines, 11 horizontal).

Dhara linga, where lingas have five to sixty four fluted facets, with prime numbers and multiples of four particularly favored.[83]
Lingodbhavamurti, where Shiva is seen as emerging from within a fiery lingam. On top of this icon is sometimes a relief of a swan or goose representing Brahma, and a boar at the bottom representing the Varaha avatar of Vishnu. This reflects the Shaiva legend describing a competition between Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu, as to who has priority and superiority.

    1. Hi, Mama, I just saw your comment 😀 I understand what you’re trying to say and I love the amount of detail you have put into explaining it, but I deliberately didn’t look too much into details for my analogy 😀 In my eyes, all I saw was that it looked like a Linga (“Ling” is also one of the spellings). And Lord Shiva loves abishegams, Mama. While Lord Vishnu loves being draped in rich silk and jewels, Lord Shiva loves being bathed. Whether it is milk or ghee or fruits. My analogy was just a result of an affectionate and devoted vision 😀
